Highlights from AIGA Design Ranch 2018

Let’s just say AIGA Design Ranch wasn’t your typical conference…

Just last month, we spent three days on a small, inspiring creative retreat in Austin, Texas. As sponsors of , we had the opportunity to mix and mingle with about 150 creatives (the largest customer segment FreshBooks’ serves) from some of the most recognized hubs in the US.

At Design Ranch, they spared attendees of boardroom keynotes and tips or tricks for being a better creative. Instead, Design Ranch challenged creatives to unplug, roll up their sleeves, come away with a fresh take on design and do it together.

You can say we were excited to be a part of it. So here are some highlights from our time at Design Ranch and ways FreshBooks helped fuel that creative fire.

Getting Creative: The Expense Mural

The expense mural brought back the nostalgia of arts and crafts. Starting off as a blank slate, attendees had the opportunity to grab an old business receipt and beautify it with a little color or sparkle. At the end of the retreat, we had a wall mural of the receipt masterpieces.

Just like how FreshBooks provides a better way to create and track expenses, we wanted this activity to reflect that.

Sparking Fun: Game of Loteria, FreshBooks-Style

Similar to Bingo, Loteria brought together a room full of participants and, in the end, winners! Using images instead of numbers, FreshBooks’ version of loteria brought back a game we all know and love—and it was a hit!

Overall, Design Ranch showed what a creative conference ought to be—packed with hands-on workshops and the opportunity for attendees to mingle with an intimate group of likeminded designers. It’s safe to say we had a blast—and doing this under the Texas sun and stars wasn’t so bad either!
